A fountain is the most common water feature we install. It goes in a bed near the front of the house or off a patio, and it becomes the thing the whole planting is built around.
The part that matters is underneath: a level, settled base so the fountain does not tip as the ground moves, and power run to it cleanly. A fountain sitting crooked two winters after it went in was not set properly.
A pond is a bigger commitment than a fountain and it takes real maintenance. We are honest about that up front rather than selling you one and disappearing.
A basin-fed feature, where the water disappears into a hidden reservoir under stone, gives you the sound and the movement with far less upkeep and no standing water. For most families, especially with small kids, it is the better choice.
Western Pennsylvania freezes. A water feature that was not built to be shut down and drained will crack, and a pump left in standing ice is a pump you replace in the spring.
We set the feature so it can be winterized, run the electric properly, and grade around it so runoff is not dumping into the basin every time it rains. If your yard already has a drainage problem, we deal with that first, because a water feature will not fix it.
