Most of the visual difference between a sharp property and a tired one is the bed edge. A clean, cut edge gives the bed a defined line, keeps the mulch where it belongs, and stops the lawn creeping into the planting.

We install double-shredded hardwood mulch as our standard. It is what holds best on the heavy clay and the graded slopes we work on around here. Double-shredded hardwood knits together as it settles, so it stays on the bed through a hard rain instead of washing off into the lawn.
You have a color choice. Dyed brown and dyed black are our primary colored options. They hold their color deeper into the season and give the darker, sharper look a lot of homeowners want against a light house or stone. Natural hardwood, which ages to a soft brown, is there if you ask for it.
We buy our mulch through S & S Processing, and we install it to a finished depth of two to three inches. That is the range that does the work: enough to hold moisture through a dry August and keep weeds down, not so much that it traps water against the stems and rots them. On a bed that already has a good base of mulch, a lighter refresh coat brings the color back without burying the crowns of your plants.

Mulching and bed edging carry a one-year workmanship warranty. That is the same term as the rest of our landscape installation work: plantings, grading, mulch and edging.
It covers our work. The depth, the edge, the way it went in. It does not cover weather, deer, insects, disease, plants nobody watered, or maintenance that never happened. Mulch also breaks down on purpose, so color fading over a season is the product doing its job, not a defect.

It comes down to the square footage of the beds and the depth. Installed mulch runs roughly $72 to $94 per cubic yard delivered and spread. Access is what moves the number: if we can dump close to the beds it is cheaper than wheelbarrowing it up a hill, which on a lot of properties around here is the reality. We install shredded hardwood bark mulch as our standard, because it knits together and holds on the clay and slopes common around Zelienople and Cranberry Township. You can choose natural hardwood, which ages to a soft brown, or dyed hardwood in brown or black, which holds its color longer into the season. We can bring in pine bark or other materials when a bed calls for it.
Neither is better; they do different things. Dyed hardwood, in brown or black, holds its color months longer and gives a darker, sharper look against a light house or stone. Natural hardwood costs a little less and ages to a soft brown. The dye on quality hardwood mulch is iron oxide or carbon based and is safe around plants and pets once it is down and dry.
Yes. Piling mulch up against tree trunks or plant stems, the mulch volcano, traps moisture against the bark and slowly kills the plant. It is the most common mistake we see. We keep mulch two to three inches deep and pulled back off the trunks and crowns, so it protects the roots without rotting the plant you paid for.
